Acts 12

CHAPTER 12 James is Killed by Herod

1 [²at ³that ¹And] time [⁴put upon ¹Herod ²the ³king] the hands to afflict some of the ones of the assembly. 2 And he did away with James the brother of John by the sword. 3 And having seen that it is pleasing to the Jews, he proceeded to seize also Peter, (and they were the days of the unleavened breads) 4 whom also having laid hold of, put into prison, having delivered him up to four parties of four soldiers to guard him, wanting after the passover to lead him to the people.

An Angel Releases Peter from Prison

5 Then indeed Peter was given heed to in the prison; [⁴prayer ¹and ²there was ³intense] taking place by the assembly unto God for him. 6 And when [²was about ³to lead him before them ¹Herod] in that night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, being bound [²chains ¹with two]; and guards before the door kept the prison. 7 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by, and a light radiated in the building; and having struck the side of Peter, he roused him, saying, Rise up quickly! And [³fell off ⁴of him ¹the ²chains] from his hands. 8 [⁴said ¹And ²the ³angel] to him, Gird yourself and tie on your sandals! And he did so. And he says to him, Put on your cloak and follow me! 9 And going forth, he followed him; and he did not know that it was true -- the thing taking place by the angel; but he thought [²a vision ¹he was seeing]. 10 And having gone through a first guard and a second, they came unto the gate of iron, the one bearing into the city, which by itself opened to them. And having come forth, they went [²street ¹by one], and immediately [³separated ¹the ²angel] from him. 11 And Peter having come to himself said, Now I know truly that the Lord sent his angel, and rescued me from the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. 12 And being fully conscious, he came unto the house of Mary the mother of John, of the one being called Mark; where there were a fit amount being gathered together and praying. 13 [³having knocked ¹And ²Peter] at the door of the vestibule, there came forward a maidservant to listen, by name Rhoda. 14 And having recognized the voice of Peter, from the joy she did not open the vestibule; but having ran in, she reported Peter to be standing before the vestibule. 15 But the ones by her said, You are maniacal. But she contended obstinately thus to have been. And they said, [²his angel ¹It is]. 16 But Peter continued knocking; and having opened, they beheld him, and were amazed. 17 And having waved to them with the hand to be quiet, he described to them how the Lord led him from out of the prison. And he said, Report to James and to the brethren these things! And having come forth he went to another place. 18 [³having come ¹And ²day], there was [³disturbance ¹no ²little] among the soldiers to what then became of Peter. 19 And Herod seeking him anxiously, and not finding, having questioned the guards, he urged them to be taken away. And having gone down from Judea to Caesarea, he spent time. 20 [³was ¹And ²Herod] violently incensed with the Tyrians and Sidonians; but with one accord they were at hand with him, and having persuaded Blastus, the one over the bedroom of the king, they asked peace; because [³was maintained ¹their ²place] by the royalty.

The Death of Herod

21 [³appointed ¹And ⁴a day ²Herod], having put on [²attire ¹royal], and having sat upon the rostrum, delivered a public address to them. 22 And the people sounded out, saying The voice of a god, and not a man. 23 And immediately [³struck ⁴him ¹an angel ²of the Lord] because he did not give the glory to God. And becoming worm-eaten, he expired. 24 But the word of God grew and multiplied. 25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, having fulfilled the service, having taken along also John, the one called Mark.
